Background
The Malden & Coombe Horticultural society was formed in 1924 as "Malden Allotment Holders Association" with 70 plots and a small trading hut in Mount Road, New Malden. Annual subscriptions were 1/- (5p) and there were between 100 and 150 members, mainly railway employees.
The history of local flower shows goes back to the end of the 20th century. Annual events were held in the large houses on Coombe Hill, Knigston upon Thames and they were regarded as major social events of the year.
In 1930 the Society became "Malden and Coombe Allotment Association" and in 1932, when the Society joined the Royal Horticultural Society, the preent titel of "Malden & Coombe Horticultural Society" was adopted.
Trading Huts
The Society now operates 3 trading huts at different locations in the area, open at the weekends, to cater for the gardening needs of its members.
Following the tradition of a long association with Allotments, the Huts are located at, Elm Road, Alric Avenue and Groveland Way Allotments. The huts are staffed by volunteers.
Details of the opening times together with special offers can be found on the "Trading Hut" Page.
Shows
The Society holds 3 formal shows each year at the Malden Center. Some 30 silver cups and trophies are presented over the year, some originating as early as the 1920's. The society has boasted eminent local figures, over the years, as Presidents, Vice Presidents, Chairmen and Secretaries and at present has a large working commitee of 18 member all with specific tasks and responsibilities.
Events
Social and educational events are held on a regular monthly basis as are summer coach trips, plant sales and involvment in local projects.
Information is readily available to all members through the bi-monthly newsletters and more recently the web site.
